Canada Truly Goes the Way of the Darkside.

By rejecting Canada's commitments to the Kyoto Accord, the government has issued a death warrant to our future generations. It is truly sad that the Rona Ambrose insists that the inability to meet targets is reason to abandon the entire concept of preventing global warming in Canada. They are all too concerned with the oil companies that contribute to their party, instead of the growing number of children requiring inhalers just to be able to breathe clearly.

Ignoring the impact of global warming shows this government's narrow vision, and the danger that this vision could have on this country.

Kyoto isn't worth the paper it is written on. If the dates for the targets were set from 1992 levels, instead of 1990 levels, no one would be able to reach the targets. What happend in those years? The shut down of all of eastern europes industry!

Global Warming is a problem (if it is happening), but it is pretty arrogant to assume that
a) humans cause it
b) that there is warming when we only have records back 50 years for accurate temperature records.
c) that the planet can't adapt to the changing conditions. Humans have lived when it was much colder (ice age) and much warmer (1100s and 1200s). Polar Bears also survived the warmer times.
d) when we know that the energy level sent from the sun is variable (this is what caused the mini ice age in the 1700s) that maybe the sun is just being a bit more energetic right now.

canada can't prevent global warming because we are only responsible for 2% of world output. we are only 30 million spread out across half of an entire continent. the half that is cold 7 months of the year.

and it's particulates (ie smog) that cause asthma in people, not co2 emmissions, captain science.

So, let me get this right...the Liberals knew that the Accord was flawed, they knew that it was out of reach, they knew that Canada could not achieve the goal...how is this Rona Ambrose's fault. How is telling the truth the wrong thing to do?? For frig's sakes, make up your mind. If Koyoto is so important for the future of the world, then, every Liberal should hang their head in shame, and, take out one big MF'er ad in every newspaper with an apology to every Canadain for the dismal failure over the last 10 years, or, just tell the truth and say whats so freakin obvious to each and everyone of us, Koyoto is unachievable in its present format, and, we have to take a different route. Or is winning votes on the back of our enviornment the new Liberalism. Pick one.

Murphy, I am with you all the way.

So because the Liberals were slow to implement policy, the Conservatives figure they are free to abandon it and not even try? In light of the fact that the UK has not only met their targets but has now set the bar higher, I can only see the Conservatives as limp at best and as deceivers at worst.

Their position is that liberals created unattainable policy and then failed to implement it. Hogwash. You cannot create both an unattainable goal and then fail to achieve it if it was unattainable to begin with. Deception and finger-pointing.

If it truly was unattainable, then why did the UK achieve and then expand their targets? If Canada's goals were off the chart, how on earth could the Liberals have held their heads up at the conference last fall in Montreal, let alone led it? How could they have, Dion specifically, gotten all those countries to come to an agreement if their own goals were so far off the charts? Why weren't all those others countries also laughing at the Liberals and calling them on their crazy plans and foot-dragging?

Why lie to cover up the true position; why not just call a spade a spade, Conservatives, and say that you are afraid of change and a servant to the oil & gas industry? At least then you would be telling the truth.

Why not just tell the truth, that so much of your backing comes from Alberta and that since Alberta is responsible for the lion's share of the emissions in this country, you would have to go against your base.

The Liberals are at least willing to write the policy and then try to implement it. They are willing to admit to their mistakes in terms of the sponsorship scandal and implement corrective measures, ie. the Gomery Inquiry. Whereas, the Conservatives prefer to change the facts and point fingers at others, making them their scapegoat. Canada is so busy looking at the scapegoat being hung out to dry, that they miss the actions of those targeting said scapegoat. Clever, but deceitful.

Hear hear!!!

If the Conservatives have one once of decency left, they will stop the finger pointing and tell the truth. It’s funny to see anonymous Conservatives posters whined here about not reaching an attainable goal and blame the liberals for it. One of them is even reconsidering global warming! What age do you live in, grampa? Those are the people who should hang their head in shame, and apologize to the international community for failing to implement an agreement that we signed and that a large majority of Canadians approved. What a shame.

Paying other countries so that we can pollute. Yeah, what a great idea.

Ignatieff recently said that we not only have to meet our Kyoto targets but that we have to press even further beyond them.

Kyoto Protocol doesn't go far enough: Ignatieff

Published: Monday, May 29, 2006
QUEBEC - Michael Ignatieff, the Toronto MP and former Harvard University professor who is seeking the leadership of the federal Liberal party, said Monday the Kyoto Protocol doesn't go far enough.

Ignatieff told reporters that pollution is a serious problem, affecting Canadians, pointing out that in Toronto yesterday his wife could not see the building on the other side of the street because the smog was so bad.

He would make the environment a priority in the next election campaign, proposing "a clear comprehensible environmental policy that every Canadian understands."

From Warren Kinsella's Musings:

Ignatieff said he supports the protocol but it has become a problem for Liberals.
"I think our party has got into a mess on the environment," he said. "As a practical matter of politics, nobody knows what (Kyoto) is or what it commits us to.

He said the Conservatives are having a field day with the record of protocol targets missed by the previous Liberal government.

"We think Kyoto has been an asset for us. It's actually been a huge political liability."

Dr. Ignatieff announced yesterday in a speech in Ottawa that he does not support scrapping the Kyoto Accord, and also reiterated that it does not go far enough.
