Why Doesn't Pat Martin Call for a Probe of Harper's 2002 Donors?

We live in magical times where an opposition M.P. decides to call for a probe of another opposition M.P.'s actions instead of focusing on the government of the day. If the Pat Martin and the N.D.P wanted to be real watchdogs they could request a probe into still missing list of donors from Stephen Harper's 2002 campaign for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance. It would make perfect sense. The probe into Joe Volpe will most likely come back saying that he did not violate any Election Canada rules, and the fact that he was abiding by those rules was the only reason this story was brought to attention.

Our sitting Prime Minister to this day has only released 54 names of contributors to his campaign for the Canadian Alliance Leadership in 2002, which would subsequently make him Prime Minister. Those 54 names account for a mere fraction of his donations, and Harper refuses to release the rest of the contributors, under the weak argument "It wasn't the law at the time".

Mr. Martin , we have a case which is pure gold. It is full of intrigue, controversey and possibly the big "C" word, corruption. The Prime Minister believes that the previous government should be held accountable for their past acts with legislation that he is bringing forward during this session. Well if we are going by those rules then he should be acountable for his acts in 2002 according to the Canadian Elections Act of 2003.

Anyway if Mr. Harper is truly running the clean and transparent government that he promised Canadians, he should have nothing to hide.

Here's where I put my money -
Steve's boys are the ones that dreamt this one up .... they run across the hall to the NDP offices.... the NDP see themselves in a position to do in the Liberals (replace the Liberals, take seats from the Liberals, etc., etc.). The Conservatives do a tradipoo with the NDP (a minor one - maybe free hockey tickets) in exchange for the NDP doing the Conservative flabbergastation thing and calling for a Royal Commission on cheating Liberals. It's become quite routine.

well put, its nice to see, that someone other than me, has seen the bull the (lend me ur vote) party has been doing, I mean, u hit it right on, Volpe, didnt do anything wrong,so far.. and harper has done the same frigin thing..and they know this, they are not that stupid, the point is, they do the damage, just by mentioning it, they did it in the last election, they are still doing it, useless, politics as of late, only politicians looking to either get a majority, god forbid, or the useless others tryin to get, more people to lend them their votes...my question is?were the hell are the dogs of politics in the liberal party, they should have a field day with this kind of amateuristic behavior...and have u seen the inexperienced supposed liberal bloggers, attackin Volpe..no info, they just wanna feel important I guess...and some are harpos minions, attacking Volpe, pretenting to be liberals...

Harper should come clean, but so should the othe candidates for leadership. Volpe seems to be the only one not hiding behind big corporate "loans". At least he posted who dontated to him.

I completely agree with Foot's comment.

As for the NDP, the only thing they've been good for is getting in the way. I'm referring to their cooperation with the Connies since last year.

Harper has released his donors names.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2004/05/21/harperdonors_040521.html

He released all donors over $200 and 75% of those under $200. No one is claiming fraud here. The Paul Martin Liberals were just desperate to find something to scare the public with, and as always they have no problem making stuff up based on lack of information.

There is no comparison to violating the electoral law (Volpe) and political parties looking for dirt they're not actually entitled to (Harper).

But as long as we're talking NDP, they're trying to make themselves out to be a better opposition than the Liberals. My guess (complete and total "what if" scenario) is they're going to try for a new election just after the Liberal leader's elected but before the party can hold a conference, then campaign on a better prepared platform.

Thank you for the link, that is useful information. I am not denying that Harper played by the rules in 2004, but we are still looking for Harper's donors from his 2002 campaign for the Canadian Alliance Leadership against Stockwell Day. We are still waiting for the complete list.
