How Convenient, the Conservatives and the NDP teamed up in Committee to Trip up the Liberal Leadership Convention.

I hope the Conservatives or the NDP don't plan on holding any policy conferences in the near future were the delegates will be allowed to claim their fees under Elections Canada. Their tag team in committee not to exempt the 5,000 individuals who plan on attending the Liberal Leadership Convention from being in violation of federal law shows their personal contempt for the Liberal Party. Going after the grass roots of a party is the most antidemocratic and cowardly move any government can do, and the fact that the NDP supported it further proves that more interested in making life difficult for the Liberal Party, instead of holding the government of the day to account.

Excuse the Liberal Party for having a process that creates regional equality, and puts the decision making in the hands of the individuals who knock on doors, put up signs and financially contribute to the party. Since the Liberals are under attack from these two other parties, who is to say if they switch to one member one system, these two parties won't buy up memberships to ensure they face their candidate of choice in the next election.

There are two clear solutions to this case.

1. Exempt the Liberal Leadership contest from the new legislation, considering it was officially called before the new parliament started.

2. Have the legislation take effect on January 1, 2007, just like the Liberals did with the Elections Act in 2003.

If neither of these cases occur, I have no option but to declare the government undemocratic and opportunistic.

Elections Canada has confirmed any paranoia that the Liberal Party has felt regarding the Accountability Act. They have stated that delegates will be in violation of federal law if they add their delegate fees to any other contributions they have made during the year. I won't get into the fact that the Liberals allowed the Conservatives to go about their leadership in 2004, by giving them a window in which to declare their race. Liberal delegates will have to sign the names of their children so they don't break the law. We could have over 5,000 Joe Volpe cases. I think each member of the Public Accounts committee that voted against the exemption should all offer to sign on as a donor for a Liberal delegate.

Ahahahahahah. Thats funny. Your asking the Cons to play nice...now?? I'd expect more from the NDP, but, asking the Cons to play nice with the Libs is like asking the Libs to play nice with the Cons. Ya get what ya give. This is what Toryblogs sounded like for 10 years, a constant whine. Get over it, get your party together and win the next election with ideas.

wow, you tory bloggers are quite technologically advanced. You were using blogs in 1996. I was online back then, no blogs to be seen. The Libs should be allowed to have a leadership convention free from partisna manipulation since the libs granted the same last time around. Are the cons going to be ethical over his or show their true colours and f**k with Canadians party of choice?

To HereHere...you are quite correct there is more than meets the eye. Unlike the elitist Tories and the union run NDP, the Liberal Party provides a travel equalization plan for national conventions. This means that all delegates have the same opportunity to attend as those within a 500 km radius of the event.
Naturally, this drives up the cost of the convention considerably.

Your grassroots are not coming up with the dough. And its obvious why that is.

They are so disillusioned and demoralized. Lots of stuff about this in the news this day of the Summer Solstice.

The CPC doesn't need to hamstring your grassroots; they are already crippled. Sorry pal, your Party is finished for a long time to come. And now your grassroots know it. Enjoy the Opposition benches for a long time to come. That is, if the NDP lets you.

Well if the convention gets shut down, I think many people have the right to complain. If the legislation passes, the government can legitmatley shut it down as a violation of federal law. By the way delegate fees for a leadership convention haven't been $250 since 1968. The convention will most likely end up in the red. The balloting and security alone will account for a large number of overhead costs. Under the Liberals there were no less than 9 leadership contests among the opposition parties, and the government never interfered in any of them. In fact they allowed the Conservatives to have one be exempt from the new elections act.
I guess anonymous has a point about prolonged opposition for the Liberal Party.(the Pit's not partisan, you forgot to read the disclaimer)Leadership races tend to give the party a bump in the polls. The government's solution, don't let them have the race, and everything will be fine.

And now they tap out over Ambrose. If this Tory Government was so very bad, they had their chance to step up and do something about it.

But they didn't. Cleary, they cannot fight another election and they know it. Right now, I'd say the blood is in the water, but the Liberals have been drained dry for a long time.

Obviously they don't know what being in Opposition entails. They allow a budget they've been known to oppose to pass without even knowing it and look completley foolish. And now this. Even in Opposition the LPC is a joke.

The Liberals are toast. And I couldn't be more elated.

Don't you have anything better to do than surf Liblogs and leave malicious messages and immature taunts.

If you support the Conservatives so much, get in contact with your local riding association and ask them how you can assist. If you don't exercise this option, you are just a cronic complainer.

Why would Liberals want to get rid of Rona. We need more good looking women in cabinet. If we got rid of her she may be replaced with Diane Ablonczky. We can't let that happen.
